AFTER THE BATH

This painting is inspired by a recently-discovered statue that was found in an ancient Buddhist stupa situated near to Chandigarh in northern India. The central figure shows a yakshi (a type of female nature spirit common to Buddhist, Hindu and Jain mythology) who is wringing her hair, after taking a bath. At her feet is a hamsa (a mythical bird symbolizing the divine spirit), which mistakes the falling water for drops of rain.
